President Obama has decided to heed the words of his former Chief of Staff , Rahm Emanuel, by not allowing a serious crisis go to waste after the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook.
According to an article on The Daily Mail, The White House is weighing far reaching firearm restrictions which includes a National Database of all gun owners:
The White House is weighing a far-reaching package of legislation that would tighten restrictions on firearm sales and ownership by requiring universal background checks for gun buyers and creating a national database to track the weapons.
…The database would require that guns be registered or permitted.
A national database of gun owners serves as a tool for future tyrants and does nothing to keep individuals safe from illegal gun violence.
Case in point, the weapons used in the tragic Sandy Hook school shooting by Adam Lanza were stolen from his mother and locally registered. The fact that law enforcement had records showing what firearms were owned by Mrs. Lanza neither prevented Adam from stealing them nor using them in the school shooting shortly after.
While in China, firearm registration is mandatory and individual gun ownership is strictly restricted to those who can prove a need for them such as for animal control. But even with these tight restrictions, illegal firearms have been running rampant. According to an article from the International Business Times, last June China confiscated 50,000 Illegally owned guns in four months.
As you can see, a National Database of legal gun owners will do nothing to prevent either illegal gun ownership or prevent criminals from obtaining firearms with which to commit crimes. While on the flip side, history has shown that a National Database of firearms registrations is very useful to tyrants who wish to disarm the populace.
According to a paper written by the Fordham Law Review (Which ironically was meant to discredit the NRA’s argument about Hitler and gun control) strict firearms licensing laws were in place in 1928 before Hitler’s leadership; which one could reason assisted Hitler in confiscating firearms from legal citizens after he came to power in 1933 just five years later:
But even before the Treaty was signed, the German parliament of
the Weimar Republic enacted legislation prohibiting gun possession.
In January 1919, the Reichstag enacted legislation requiring the
surrender of all guns to the government. This law, as well as the
August 7, 1920, Law on the Disarmament of the People passed in light
of the Versailles Treaty, remained in effect until 1928, when the
German parliament enacted the Law on Firearms and Ammunition
(April 12, 1928)-a law which relaxed gun restrictions and put into
effect a strict firearm licensing scheme. The licensing regulations
foreshadowed Hitler’s rise to power-and in fact, some argue, were
enacted precisely in order to prevent armed insurrection, such as
Hitler’s attempted coup in Munich in 1923, as well as Hitler’s later rise
to power.
Any reasonable individual should be able to clearly see that a National Database of gun owners can only be useful to tyrants by allowing them easy access to information about which citizens own firearms and what type of firearms are in their possession. A National Database could even, as the Fordham paper pointed out, be a possible tool used by a Government to prevent armed insurrection by the populace. This type of tool flies in the face of the true intentions of the 2nd Amendment which was to ensure that the American people had the means to overthrow a tyrannical Government.
But in the interest of honesty, recent American history has demonstrated that a tyrant does not need such a Database in order to seize weapons from law abiding citizens, they just need a willing populace (or at least one that doesn’t fight back).
According to an article from The New York Times, in 2005 the Superintendent of Police of New Orleans, Louisiana declared that no civilians will be allowed to have firearms in the wake of Hurricane Katrina:
No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass III, the superintendent of police. “Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons,” he said.
This order was the beginning of unconstitutional firearms confiscations on a scale of which has not been seen in American History:
Police and National Guard units ended up confiscating over 1,000 legally owned firearms from law abiding citizens for no other reason than the Superintendent of Police ordered them to do so.
Still think that tyranny can’t happen here?
So knowing that a National Database of gun owners will do nothing to make society safer from criminal violence but instead will become a tool for tyrants the question remains.
Why does the President of the United States wish to push such a Database?
There can be only one correct answer to this disturbing question, either:
#1 The President is so short sighted, uneducated and inept as a student of history that he feels this Database will actually result in making the American people safer from gun violence.
or
#2 He is an intelligent individual who has been so influenced by his Marxist / Progressive upbringing that he sees this “Crisis” as an opportunity to limit the Freedoms of the American People while increasing the centralized power of the Federal Government.
I’ll allow you to decide…
