The Obama Administration has repeatedly demonstrated that individual Liberty means little to the President, especially if it stands in the way of the his agenda. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the head of the USDA, Agricultural Secretary Tom Vilsack, has recently echoed the same train of thought.
One day after a judge ruled Mayor Bloomberg’s soda ban wouldn’t be enforced, Tom Vilsack told a group of Medical Professionals at the Main Medical Center that the court decision was taking us in a “different direction” and that the administration is “concerned and hopeful” that people will “redirect” the “conversation” away from “small matters”:
You know, there is obviously a discussion about Mayor Bloomberg’s sugary drink ban and, you know, he’s doing his best to try to control this, but we don’t want that court battle to take us in a different direction and lose sight of what he’s trying to do. And what he’s trying to do and what we’re trying to do is make sure that healthy choices are available, that portion sizes are appropriate, and it is sort of moderation in all things. So we are a little bit concerned about that and we are hopeful that people will redirect the conversation away from those small matters — important, but small in the scheme of things — and bring it back to healthy choices.
I find it a tad coincidental that a man, who just days ago used the same excuse to defend Illegal Workers that was used by plantation owners before the Civil War to defend slavery (by claiming that food prices would rise without them), gave a speech where he basically claims that Liberty is a “small matter”.
Because individual Liberty is at the heart of the fight against the soda ban in New york City. In a Free Nation a Free Citizen should have the right to buy whatever size drink that is being sold in the Free Market without being dictated to by a tyrannical Government on what is “appropriate”.
But there are those like, Mayor Bloomberg and Tom Vilsack, who would have you believe that they aren’t doing anything but trying to help, when in reality it’s just another example of those in Government thinking that they know what is better for you and your family than you do.
Because not only is the road to hell paved with good intentions… but so is the road to Tyranny.
