A Democrat State Representative, a former Democrat State Senator, and a local Union President walked into a public high school in Connecticut to receive a Communist award.
Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke right?
I only wish it was…
According to an article on the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) News, People’s World, in December of 2013 a Communist award ceremony was held in a New Haven Connecticut public high school auditorium where the Democrat State Rep, Former Democrat State Senator and the local Union President all received awards:
NEW HAVEN, CONN. — From the opening video and drumming to the remarks of the awardees, songs, youth slide show and finale, an atmosphere of unity and optimism inspired the entire multi-racial audience at the 2013 People’s World Amistad Awards, held in the auditorium of Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School.
Taking off from the event’s theme of “Marching On for Jobs, Freedom & Peace,” a thread throughout the afternoon was solidarity with nurses and tech caregivers at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London who had been locked out the night before.
In his closing remarks Rev. Scott Marks brought the crowd to its feet as he called for door-to-door organizing that will “move forward” the fight for jobs and other needs. “I will not go back!” he exclaimed passionately.
Marks and all the awardees praised the vision and work of the Communist Party in their communities. The event was held on the occasion of the CPUSA’s 94th anniversary.
Former state Senator Ed Gomes, a steelworker, state representative Edwin Vargas, a teacher, and Laurie Kennington, president of Local 34 clerical and technical workers at Yale all accepted large framed posters of the Amistad statue that stands in front of New Haven City Hall, cheered on by family, friends, co-workers, elected officials and union and community leaders.
During his acceptance speech, Connecticut Democrat State Representative, Edwin Vargas, stated that the Communists in attendance were the “hard core” of the movement and followed up with a quote from Communist mass-murderer, Che Guevara:
Rep. Edwin Vargas, who taught in the Hartford public schools for 35 years, serving as union president for part of that time, and in many national, state and local positions in union and Puerto Rican community organizations said that while he has received many awards, this one has special meaning because “this is an award from people who are the hard core of the movement.”
Quoting Che Guevara that “the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love,” Vargas elaborated on the fact that justice cannot be achieved without peace.
This isn’t the first time New Haven’s Public School Board has allowed Communists to use their publicly funded high school auditoriums. In 2010 the CPUSA held their Amistad Awards at the James Hillhouse Public high school in New Haven where John Olson (top picture, rear row) received an award.
I also find it hilariously ironic that the Young Communist League (YCL) whose motto is “Unite and Fight'”, and whose Southern California Branch is in favor of all forms of Revolution including violence, is at an event touting “Peace” and “Freedom”.
Communists and freedom? Really? How dumb do you have to be to buy into that marketing ploy?
If you add to the fact another Communist award was given to a member of New York City ‘s Democrat Mayor de- Blasio’s transition team you might jokingly say the Democrats made a clean sweep in the Commie awards last month. But then again, this isn’t a joke, and I find it rather disturbing that the CPUSA and the Democrat Party aren’t concerned in the least about working openly together.
It’s just a shame more people, like the citizens of New Haven for instance, haven’t learned the history of Communism. If they had, then maybe I wouldn’t be the only one who finds the Commie / Democrat partnership, nothing to laugh about.

None of the articles state WHEN the event was held. If it were held during non-school hours, then using the school building is appropriate/allowed. Public schools, because are funded by public dollars, must allow outside groups to use their facilities for such events … whether or not we approve of the groups. I remember one time when the Nation of Islam was allowed to speak at my school; but, if was after hours. On the other hand, this is how Christian groups are allowed to gain access to schools for clubs, Bible studies, and “See You At The Pole” events — as long as the event is held during non-school hours, it is constitutional.
Yeah, well, might as well let the Nazis in too while they’re at it then, huh? I mean, “it’s constitutional” and all. That’s not the point! The constitutionality is overridden by the threat and the message of the destruction of the very fabric that makes up the pillars upon which the Constitution rests and the morals by which it remains powerful. To kill is against the law, but so, only if one is not faced with the threat of death, upon which time said threat overrides the law. Sorry Kate, but you are wrong. These dare-I-say “people,” deserve the gas chamber, period.
so Kate you support communism? then i suggest you also take a look at its results , i’m a former Australian soldier , from my experience communism is similar to islam both leave mass graves everywhere they go , i served 10 years in cambodia , then east timor , both places full of mass graves , as suggested in the communists guide book , kill everyone who has a chance to create counter revolution ( speak out against communism ) , love slaughtering innocents?? your supporting the right group …
“…..must allow outside groups to use their facilities for such events … whether or not we approve of the groups.” On the other hand this is how Christian groups are allowed……”
Christian groups are routinely disapproved or have to pay a hefty fee to use public school facilities after hours contrary to your dogmatic assertion that “it is constitutional.” The fact that its constitutional means nothing to leftist school administrators who are intolerant of anything Christian to include traditional Christmas carols. It’s also constitutional that a student can bring a Bible to school and read it as long as it doesn’t interfere with normal school activities but more often than not they are told they can’t bring it to school nor can they wear clothing with slogans printed thereon that proclaims their solidarity with pro-life and traditional marriage. It is offensive and inflammatory the school administrators say even though it is their constitutional right of free speech.
We have gone from being a law abiding nation tolerant of free speech to one that is lawless at the highest levels of our government, where lying is the norm not the exception, and a nation where there is a hostile environment of intolerance of everything that has the slightest connotation of traditional values associated with it particularly when its presented as a act of free speech. America is a post constitutional republic.

I’d have locked all the exterior doors and thrown a few incendiary devices into the auditorium….and an hour later there’d have been fewer America Hating Marxist Devils in our country, acting as Enemies Within!
I once read an article where a high ranking KGB officer said that the Soviets only pretended to give up on the cold war! In pretending to lose it made communism no longer a threat! It opened up all aspects of trade and made it easier for them to steel our military secrets! Made it easier to spy and it’s now obvious he was correct! \
Allowing communism to infect our nation it has brought us to brink of collapse! Maybe Joseph Mccarthy was extreme in his fight but it is clear he was spot on! If my children are ever given a communist award, I’ll walk up on stage tear it up and leave!
good for you Mike .

Fantastic blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own blog soon but I’m a little
lost on everything. Would you recommend starting with a free platform
like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally confused ..
Any recommendations? Many thanks!
If you are serious I would suggest a free wordpress site to start out. Build a following through the social media platforms, and then after you get some regular traffic, look into a self-hosted site at a place like GoDaddy. You may want to start with GoDaddy from the beginning, they have some great hosting packages just for WordPress sites. I have been using them for many years and the service and customer service has always been great for me. Good Luck and feel free to share a link if you start something. Thanks for the question!
